Key Research Themes

As the respiratory virus season winds down, spring represents a key opportunity to continue vaccination efforts and close care gaps. This theme supports pharmacists in transitioning to a year-round immunization approach, with a focus on COVID-19 second dose catch-up for high-risk patients and proactively identifying opportunities for pneumococcal, shingles, HPV, and travel vaccines during routine care interactions.

How to Apply the Content in Practice

  • Identify and Prioritize Vaccination Opportunities:
Proactively use patient profiles, medication cues, and seasonal triggers (e.g., spring eligibility, travel plans) to identify patients due for COVID-19 catch-up and other key vaccines.
  • Embed Year-Round Immunization into Workflow:
Shift from a seasonal mindset to continuous vaccine screening by integrating immunization checks into routine pharmacy touchpoints such as prescription interactions and medication reviews.
  • Drive Uptake Through Confident Recommendations:
Normalize vaccination as standard care by using clear, presumptive language and leveraging everyday patient interactions to increase acceptance and close care gaps.
Year-Round Immunization: Maintaining Momentum Beyond Respiratory Season

February is a critical month to protect vulnerable patients who missed earlier clinics, as respiratory virus activity often peaks between January and March. This theme focuses on using “presumptive offers” and proactive screening to ensure high-risk individuals—particularly those with diabetes, lung conditions, or aged 65+—receive protection for the remainder of the season
Infographic

  • Lead with Confident, Presumptive Offers:
Instead of asking “if” a patient wants a shot, use routine language like “Let’s get you protected today” to signal that vaccination is a standard part of their care.
  • Target High-Risk Clinical Flags:
Proactively identify and offer vaccines to patients picking up metformin (diabetes), inhalers (respiratory conditions), or those whose profiles show they are 65 or older.
  • Correct the “Too Late” Misconception:
Educate patients that flu season often lasts until May and COVID-19 circulates year-round; since protection develops in just two weeks, February is still an effective time to vaccinate.
  • Normalize Coadministration:
Save patients a trip and increase coverage by recommending that flu and COVID-19 vaccines be administered together in a single visit.
  • Engage the Entire Team:
Empower assistants and technicians to flag unvaccinated patients during intake and phone calls, while pharmacists focus on addressing specific clinical concerns with empathy.
  • Maintain the Therapeutic Relationship:
If a patient declines, respect their decision and “keep the door open” by documenting the conversation and offering to check in again during their next visit
