Overall, AI improved accuracy, but when the AI recommendation was wrong, user accuracy plunged to 26.1%. Participants also accepted nearly three-quarters of incorrect AI recommendations, raising concerns about automation bias. The takeaway? AI may be a useful second set of eyes, but pharmacists still need to question what it tells them.<\/p>\n<h5><b>2: The Prescribing Cascade<\/b><\/h5>\n<p>Sometimes the treatment for a new symptom is actually treating the side effect of another drug. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoronto.ca\/news\/common-drugs-may-trigger-cascade-unnecessary-prescriptions-older-adults-study-finds?utm_source=rxbriefly&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=should-pharmacists-trust-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">A new Ontario-wide study<\/a> identified potentially inappropriate prescribing cascades among older adults, where a medication side effect is mistaken for a new condition and another drug is added to treat it. Researchers found common medications, including statins and iron supplements, among those potentially involved. These everyday surfaces deserve a little extra side-eye.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>We touch hundreds of shared surfaces without thinking twice about it. And while respiratory viruses such as influenza primarily spread through the air, contaminated hands and surfaces can still play a role in transmitting some infections. So, what deserves a warning this cold-and-flu season?<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few of the big ones:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\ud83d\udcf1<b>Phones:<\/b> Research has detected influenza <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34534320\/?utm_source=rxbriefly&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=should-pharmacists-trust-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">viral material on the phones<\/a> of people with the flu. And because phones travel from the pharmacy counter to the kitchen table to, yes, the bathroom, regular cleaning isn&#8217;t a bad idea.<\/li>\n<li>\ud83e\uddfe\u00a0<b>Self-checkout and ordering screens:<\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0362028X26001456?utm_source=rxbriefly&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=should-pharmacists-trust-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">A new 2026 study<\/a> swabbed high-touch surfaces in stores and restaurants and found widespread microbial contamination. Convenience-store touchscreens stood out, with 88.9% testing positive for a marker of human fecal bacteria.<\/li>\n<li><b>\u2708\ufe0f Airport security trays:<\/b> Possibly one to remember before Thanksgiving travel. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30157776\/?utm_source=rxbriefly&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=should-pharmacists-trust-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">One study found<\/a> respiratory viruses on <b>half of the security trays sampled<\/b> at Helsinki Airport.<\/li>\n<li>\ud83c\udfeb<b> Shared school surfaces:<\/b> Think doorknobs, desks and other communal surfaces. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32179916\/?utm_source=rxbriefly&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=should-pharmacists-trust-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Studies have detected<\/a> influenza viral material on frequently touched surfaces in schools during flu season.<\/li>\n<li>\ud83d\uded2<b> Shopping cart handles:<\/b> Add this to the list of reasons to wash your hands after the grocery run. Researchers who swabbed 820 shopping cart handles found <i>S. aureus<\/i>, <i>E. coli<\/i> and other potentially harmful bacteria, including some antibiotic-resistant strains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The pharmacy takeaway:<\/b> No need to scare patients away from the debit machine. Remind them that surface contamination doesn&#8217;t automatically equal infection, and for flu, respiratory spread is the bigger concern. In a new McGill-led study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2528246123?utm_source=rxbriefly&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=should-pharmacists-trust-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">after 30 hours awake<\/a>, 20 minutes of cycling protected memory about as well as a 90-minute nap, with both groups performing roughly 22% better than those who did neither. Only the nap made people feel less tired, but the sleepy exercisers still remembered more than controls. Researchers think exercise may help the brain use its remaining resources more efficiently \u2014 potentially useful when sleep isn\u2019t possible mid-shift.<\/p>\n<p><b>2:<\/b>\u00a0\ud83e\udd5c A little nut intake went a surprisingly long way in a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/42555214\/?utm_source=rxbriefly&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=should-pharmacists-trust-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">new cognition study<\/a>. Among 1,742 stroke-free adults, higher nut intake was associated with better global cognition, with the strongest links in people with poorer diets or lower physical activi<b>ty.<\/b> Median intake was only 1.3 g a day \u2014 about one almond or a couple of pistachios. Before anyone starts prescribing trail mix: the study was observational and found no drop in dementia or stroke risk over 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><b>3:<\/b>\u00a0\ud83e\udec0 There\u2019s jet lag, social jet lag, and now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43856-026-01758-5?utm_source=rxbriefly&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=should-pharmacists-trust-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u201ceating jetlag.\u201d<\/a> In a study of 104,806 French adults, researchers compared weekday and weekend eating schedules and found that each extra hour of difference between the two was associated with a 14% higher risk of cardiovascular disease and 21% higher risk of coronary heart disease in men. No significant link showed up in women, and the association held after accounting for diet quality and sleep.
